Indiana Jones and the Mayan Secret 1/350th |
Pic 1 - The temples have been started using foam and thin cork that I got from the local craft shop, the foam was cut to size and then the coark was attached and then trimmed off. The base is just some old foam core I had in the cupboard. |
Pic 2, 3 & 4 - The cork has been added and all the steps and doors that I wanted have been done by using left over scrap pieces of cork and the main temple has had some extra treimming added by using balsa wood. |
I added cobblestone roads by using 1/72 scale railway cardbaord sheets and just cut them out and glued them inplace. I also gave the temples a good covering of watered down woodglue so when the plaster mix was added the water from the plaster wouldn't be absorbed by the cork. |
Pic 5 & 6 - The plaster mix was used to cover the temples and base and then left to dry. |
Pic 7 & 8 - Once the plaster has dried I gave the base a quick spray of Tamiya's German Grey. As you can seenot all the dio was covered in spray paint, don't worry if this happens as you just want some sought of seal for when you paint the the buildings. |
Pic 9 - The temples once dry were fully painted using Codex Grey from Games Workshop and the dirt area's were painted using Vallejo's Flat Earth. |
Pic 10 & 11 - Once the temples have dried I gave them a wash of watered down Chaos Black From Games Workshop. And Pic 12 the cobblestone road has had a light wash of Chaos Black then dried brushed a mix of Biege Brown and Dark Sand both from Vallejo. |
Pic 13 & 14 - When the wash has fully dried I gave the temples a drybrush of Codex Grey and then a drybrush of a two part mix of Codex Grey and Off White whih is from Vallejo. |
Pic 15, 16 & 17 - When everything was dry I started using model railway flock for the base to simulate grass, weeds and vines. I used and two part mix of light green and brown flock which I got from Woodland Scenics and used woodglue to adhere it to the base and temples. Let this dry for about 1/2 hour then shake off any excess and store away for later projects. |
Pic 18 & 19 - To simulate jungle I used Woodland Scenics make your own tree kits and coarse flock and started placing it around the base. When placing the trees and flock I just added it where I thought it would look good. |
Pic 20, 21 & 22 - Finally complete all that was left after adding the jungle I weathered the temples by using pastels and finally gave it a spary of dull coate. This small dio will be used in a short stop motion film and will be used for distance views from a plane and atop of a valley where these temples are. |

INDIANA JONES and The Chachapoyan Temple Display 1/6 |
Pic 1,2 - Shows the Sideshows Toys Gold idol pedestal which has been repainted using Vallejo's German Grey. The foot stones were painted with Vallejo's Hull Red and the vines painted Vallejo's Khaki, it was then drybrushed with a 50/50 mix of Vallejo's German Grey and Off White. |
Pic 3,4 & 5 - Pic 3 the vines have been covered with Woodland scenics bushes and then pastels were used to tone down the green a little (Pic 4). Pic 5 the grooves were filled with a mix of very fine sand and Vallejo's Letaher Brown. |
Pic 6,7 & 8 - Pic 6 and 7 Pastels were used to tone down the stone and give it a more weathered look and then some sand was used to simulate where Indy dropped some from the bag. Woodlamd scenics static grass was attached to and then a wash of Vallejo's Red brown was used once the static grass was dry. Pic 8 very fine chopped Parsley and Garden moss was used to give the base a even more weathered feel. |
Pic 9, 10 & 11 - Pics 9 and 10 a picture frame was used for the base and foam core was used for the back section with a balsa wood frame added for strength. Pic 11 thin foam was glued the foam core and then left to dry for about 3 hours. |
Pic 12 & 13 - Pic 12 the faces on the wall were made using the same thin foam as in Pic 11 and the rock were then carved out then plaster of paris was used to cover the whole back section as seen in Pic 13. |
Pic 14, 15 - Pic 14 shows the back section was it was given a few coats of Matt Black spray paint and then left to dry for and hour. Once dry it was painted using Vallejo's GermanGrey and weathered using different coloured browns and Tans pastels. |
Pic 16, 17 & 18 - Pic 16 shows the Chachapoyan Map attached to the back section which I got of the net and resized to the desired size. Woodland Scenics Bushes wwre again used to create vines. Pic 17 and 18 the pedestal and idol were added but not secured down so it ca be packed away safely for transporting. |
Pic 19, 20 - Both pics show the spider webs attached which are from a halloween decoration and two small spiders were also added which I got from a two dollar shop. The Indy figure is from TLC display as I'm still waiting for parts to arrive for this display to see more finished pics go to the Indiana Jones section. |

INDIANA JONES (Don't worry...this is child's play) 12 inch |
This diorama will depict when Indy is getting ready to swing over to rescue his dad from the nazis and try and get him out of the castle. I decided to only do half the window section mainly due to the space factor, but I belive it still will make a great little dio from The Last Crusade. |
Pic 1,2 & 3 - The diorama's back wall was cut from foam core and then balsa wood was used to make the frame and support section at the back, this also helps to stregthen the diorama, The main base I got from a local craft shop this wil help to balance the diorama also. |
In Pic 4 - The window shutter is made using balsa wood the panels have been done by ruling in the lines then using a pair of tweezers I scribed the panels into the wood. Pic 5 - I used thin foam sheet to cover the foam core and glued it down using PVA/wood glue, The arch was done by bending and then pinning the foam to the balsa wood frame. |
Pic 6 & 7 - Once the foam had dried I marked out the brick work using a pen and then I cut the lines using a model knife then scribed the lines using a ruler. I made the window frame again using balsa wood and also used balsa wood for the edging of the diorama. |
Pic 8, 9 & 10 - The windows ledge was done by cutting a thick piece of balsa wood and then I used the thin foam sheets to cover the balsa, The legdes support section is also balsa wood cut out and sanded to shape. Once I was happy with the way the brick work looked I used a mix of plaster of paris and PVA/woodglue and lightly covered the bricks. |
Pic 11, 12, 13 & 14 - Firstly the wall was painted using Vallejo's Red Leather and the is was painted with Vallejo's Biege Brown, a heavy drybrush of Games Workshops Bestail Brown was applied and the a heavy wash of Games Workshops Chaos Black was applied. |
Pic 15, 16 & 17 - Once the wash had dried I drybrushed the wall using a Vallejo two part mix of Biege Brown and Off White and then a light drybrush of Vallejo's USA Tan Earth. The window frame was painted using Games Workshops Scorched Brown , once the window frame was done I used pastels to give the bicks and frame an old worn look. The window shutter was marked out and then I painted it using Vallejo's Black and Off White. |
The handle and hinges for the shutter were made using plasti card, the glass for the window is from a Dragon figure container, the diorama's edges were painted and a small TLC poster was added. |
Pic 18 - Here is the finally layout with a custom TLC Indy figure, you can see more pics in the Indiana Jones section. |

INDIANA JONES EXHIBITION 12 inch |
The diorama is layed out on top of a picture frame to get the desired look. The crates are made from balsa wood and are of no required size, I just made them so the items could sit on top of them. |
The crates have had pin heads pushed into them to simulate nail heads, I painted them using Games Workshop and Vallejo paints and once the paint dried I used sand paper to get the old ware look on them. The back wall is made from foamcore I used a model knife and a pair of tweezers to scribe in the lines and chipped part of the walls. |
The columns are from a tube that held posters I cut them in half and again used a model knife and a pair of tweezers to scribe in the lines into them. The floor is just plaster of paris laid down over the base. |
Once the plaster dried I then used a two part mix of fine sand and plaster of paris to cover the back wall and columns, I stuffed paper down the columns so that I could cover the tops of them with plaster/sand. Once the plaster/sand dried I painted and drybrushed the wall and also the floor using Vallejo paints to I got the desired look. |
Once the paint dried on the floor I used PVA/woodglue to cover the floor and then poured fine sand over the top of the glue and let sit for a few hours till it dried and brushed away any excess sand. |
I printed of Indy posters which I got off the net and down sized them and attached them to the crates using pin heads again to simulate nail heads, The weapons on the back wall were superglued inplace and again pins were used to simulate the holders. |
The two pistols are from the new Sideshow Toys 12" Indiana Jones, the MP40 top left is from Dragon models, the Cario sword is from Hasbro's 12" Cairo swordsman and the Temple of Doom sword is from the Relic Hunter Figure. All items except the Temple sword were repainted. |
The Raider of the lost ark items are as follows the ark is from Hasbro's 3-3/4" range the Idol and sandbag are from Sideshow Toys. The Life magazine, the Chachapoyan Map and the Staff of Ra medallion have been taken off the net and downsized and printed off, the chain on the medallion is from a $2 shop. |
The Chachapoyan artifacts are from a friend of mine I made casts of them so that I could keep the originals, the only things that were painted were the sandbag and the artifacts. |
Pic 10 is just showing what the over all dio is looking like, Pic 11 I've added the bible from ROTLA which again a got pictures from the net down sized them and printed off, I added more blank pages to create the thickness and used a piece of old leather for the cover. |
The Temple of Doom items are as follows the Urn is from Hasbro's 3-3/4" line, Sankara stones are from Frontline Custom heads, Voodoo doll is made from balsa wood and leather and the Sankara cloth is from the net and I printed it onto some fine cloth. |
In Pic 12 I have added the Crusade section by adding the following parts, Grail and Coronado's Cross are from Hasbro. The rubbing is a copy I got from a friend, the manuscript, Grail dairy, small piece of paper with the Roman numerals and Henry's Parcel are from the net. I down sized them and printed them off. |
Pic 13 is the KOTCS items the face mask is from Hasbro and Ox's letter, enevlope and photo are again of the net down sized and printed off. |
With Pic 14 I added two more weapons to the back wall which are the Thompson and German Pistol they have been attached the same way as the rest of the weapons as in Pic 7. |
Pic 15 I decided to add some info on the movies and got the pictures and writing from THE RAIDER.NET as they have excellent pictures and info on all four films. |
Pic 16 is an overall view of the whole diorama and all the Indy clothing and equipment are from Sideshow Toys, I decided to go with the clothing as it adds more realsim to the exhibition. And as always you can see better pics in the indiana jones section. |

UPDATED 20/10/2008 SCROLL DOWN FOR PART 3-1A - PAINTING GERMAN SOLDIERS |
INDIANA JONES ROTLA CHASE SCENE 3-3/4 inch |
PART 1 - CARGO TRUCK CONVERTING |
The truck was totally pulled apart to make it easier to cut and sand when needed. The pic shows the end results after all the work was done. I actually removed the door hinges that made the doors open and also removed the whip at the back and also the tow bar. |
I removed the grill and cut the bulky connections the made the grill fall and replaced them with plasti-card and plasti rod. I then removed the left and right hand side size deflectors. I cut the ball from the top and drilled holes in the bottom and replaced the bulky rods with thinner plasti-rod and then bent them to shape. Once the glue dried I drilled holes into the mounts and inserted the deflectors. The last thing I did was drill five holes in the into the plate just underneath the numberplate. |
In pic 4 you can see that I have removed the old gear stick rod and replaced it with a thinner rod from plasti-rod and covered the seat with tissue paper to simulate material.Pic 5 and 6 I have removed the one piece handles and replaced them with plasti-rod, which was drilled into the plastic. Pic 7 I again removed the hand grip from the back of the truck and used plasti-rod to replace it I also added a plate using cardboard and drilled holes into it. The muffler in some larger plasti-tube cut to size and glued in place. On left side guard I've used cardboard again to simulate the numberplate and two 1/6 buttons glued together to simulate the reflector. |
In Pic 8 and 9 I have removed the handgrips on either side of the cabin behind the doors and replaced them using plasti-card and rod, the door handles were removed and also replaced using plasti-card and rod. The side mirrors and reflectors have been given the old chop as well, I kept the mirror and reflectors and re-attached them to thinner plasti-rod. Pic 10 you can see that the radiator grill has had the clip that help the grill removed and puttied up and I have also removed the symbol on the hood, I replaced it with a Mecede Benz logo as well as putting a logo on the front using plasti-tube and card the two side handles are photo etched 1/35 pieces I had in eth bits box. Pic 11 I have added some interior detail on the back of the cabin using some 1/35 scale military boxes and old pieces of leather and a piece of cardboard with holes drilled into to simulate screws. Pic 12 you can see a closer shot of the side mirror detailing and also the handgrip and door handles and I also added hinges for the door using plasti-rod. |
In Pic 13 and 14 I used cloth I got from a cloths store and covered the plastic tarp with it using wood glue, Once the glue started to dry I used watered down glue to soak up the cloth so the detail from the plastic would come through. I decided to keep the side window flaps down as I thought it looked better and I drilled holes into the sides and then added small eyelets to simulate the tie downs. Pic 15 shows the some procedure as the outside I also added the front section using balsa wood cut to size and glued inplace. |
These last pics show the whole vehicle put together and with two figures in the cab to show you what it will look like with crew. |

PART 2 - CARGO TRUCK PAINTING & WEATHERING |
Pic - 1 - The truck was put back together
and given a coat of Tamiya's Matt Black (spray) then three coats of Tamiya's
German Grey (spray).
Pic - 2 - The Trucks tarp was given a few drybrush's of Vallejo's Khaki. Pic - 3 - The inside of the cab was given a coat of Tamiya's Light Sea Grey (spray). Pic - 4 - I then hand painted the truck (yes hand painted) with Reaper Minaitures Armour Grey. The reason I hand painted the truck was you still get an even surface but surface will actually give a rough appearance which you want. |
Pic - 5 - The tarp was then given another
drybrush but with Vallejo's Off White, keep drybrushing until the old plastic
tarp details come thru onto the cloth tarp. Pic - 6 - Give the truck a nice hardy worn feel by using Games Workshop's Mithril Silver, when doing this use the brush as you would when doing a drybrush technic on whatever you use to remov ethe excess paint. Then dab the brush on the area's you think would get worn, such as door handles, foot steps etc. Pic - 7 - I then gave the area's a were I
already done the Mithril Silver PIC-6 a light wash of Tamiya's Hull Red to
simulate a little more wear. I also painted the cab's seat with Vallejo's Khaki
and painted the console and steering wheel, You don't have to detail the inside
of the cab that much as the two figures will hide it anyway. Pic - 8 - Give the wheels a coat of Games Worksops Chaos Black and then give the tarp another drybrush of Vallejo's biege Brown. I also painted the mirrors using Mithril Silver to simulate mirrors and then reflectors on the front of the truck Off White. The Mecedez Benz symbol was painted using Mithril Silver. |
Pic - 9 - Next I added the dirt/sand by
mixing plaster of paris with some Vallejo's Light Sand and dabbed the mixer
around the truck using a paint brush, I used the ROTLA dvd as a guide but you
don't have to be movie accurate I added extra dirt/sand under the guards etc.
Before adding the dirt/sand I printed of new number plates front and back and
also the companies symbol on right side at back (red/white triangle). See Pics
13 and 14.
Pic - 10 - I then used Vallejo's Biege Brown and watered it down and dabbed it over the area's where I put the dirt/sand to give it a darker look. |
| Pic - 11,12,13 & 14 - The Truck was then given a light Drybrush of Vallejo's Light Sand this was done all over the truck even the tarp. I then added tie downs on the tarp and then gave the truck a coat of Testor's Dull Coate to seal it all in. The truck is now ready to take on passengers so stay tuned for part 3. | ||||
PART 3/1A - FIGURES/DIORAMA PAINTING & WEATHERING PAINTING THE GERMAN SOLDIERS |
| Pic - 1,2 & 3 - The German soldiers are all from Hadro's Indy line, I postioned the figures in the desired poses and then cut of there boots as they would'nt fit in the back correctly. Once the poses were done I superglued them in place and then puttied 90% off the joints as most of the joints won't be seen. | ||||
| Pic - 4,5,6 & 7 - The figures were then painted using Vallejo's Biege Brown and once dry were drybrushed with Vallejo's Dark Sand. Once completely dry all figures had the pouches painted and there faces and hands repainted as well. The MP-40's were painted Matt Black then drybrushed with Vallejo's Gun Metal. | ||||
| Pic - 8,9,10 & 11 - The last few pictures show how the figures sit inside the back of the truck and also in the cabin. The crate is from the Disney 4" figures it has been repainted and has rope added to simulate it being tied down. NOTE: there should eb 7 figures in the back but I decided against it as I thought that it looked good with only 6 figures in the back. | ||||
